The Neuse River Greenway Trail So Much More Than Sunflowers

The Neuse River Greenway Trail So Much More Than Sunflowers

If you live in Wake Forest and/or North Raleigh you have undoubtedly had a friend visit and post selfies and happy smiling pictures on social media with the sunflowers.  Mile 25 to be exact of the Neuse River Greenway  hosts a  massive 50 acre field of sunflowers that makes a worthwhile outing for the whole family in the late summer. The Neuse River Greenway Trail   extends from Falls Dam to the Clayton line. 27.5 paved miles that runs along the river and offers many interesting and fun views at all times of the year.

If you bike, run or walk the greenway  (no motor vehicles allowed - although there are several parking areas and entrances along the trail every few miles) from the trailhead near the Dam, there are so many interesting sites to see...

The Bike Guy sits across from the parking lot just before the trail head. You can rent bikes for the day (great for visiting relatives) and the last minute pedal repairs, bike shorts or brake fixes are ideal to be prepared for the long ride. You are always greeted with a smile and a nice conversation about your plans for the day.

View at mile overpass and picnic area   One of the most consistently stellar view of the trail all year round,  is heading back to the dam from a long ride and rounding the corner for a rest break at the picnic area.  The lighting is always perfect for a picture, just a bit of whitewater and all the beauty is breathtaking. Even if you just go for the picnic, the view is yours and right off the road for those that don't have the time to hike a distance prior to opening their picnic basket.

Kayak Launches For the more active fans of the river, there are several places you can enjoy the water.  From kayak launches, to tire swings you can live like the days gone by.  Pretty sure someone has lost a cellphone in the process, but this is definitely "in the moment fun"so you may not notice at least for a  little while.

Moon Flowers and Wildlife Everyone knows a sunflower, but did you know that there are moonflowers too? They are white and shaped like a trumpet and open up to the moon the same way the sunflowers open to the sun. Morning walks near the Bedford at Falls River entrance at just the right time of year produce similarly fantastic view as the sunflowers.  The field is much smaller but the wonder of nature is very much the same at this portion of the trail.  You might even happen on some grazing deer or a wayward turtle.  There are snakes as well, but don't tell this to the visiting relatives and scare them away.

Ride your Bike to Soccer Practice or go for a walk/run while the children are at play.  The trail runs along many popular destination locations, one of which is the home of the  WRAL soccer fields for the NCFC Youth Program (formerly known as the Capital Area Soccer League).  Located at the back section of the soccer park, is the mile 6 entrance to the trail.  The bridge connecting the first 6 miles to the rest of the trail was the last section developed to make the trail complete.  No need to sit in you car while the kids are at play.

Compass Rose navigation and many more interesting photo opportunities greet you along the trail Just as the wonders of nature abound, the architectural features of the suspension bridge, the homes along the greenway, the picket fences the view over the river are breath-taking.
