Staying Fit at Home

During these strange and uncertain times many of us are quarantined inside our Raleigh homes looking for ways to stay active within the confines of our homes and  Wake County neighborhoods.  If binge watching the latest Netflix series has gotten old and you find yourself getting a little stir crazy here are some ideas of ways to remain active, get the blood flowing and get the heart rate up..  This post will present various levels of exercise keeping in mind that each reader may possess various levels of fitness.

Where To Start

If you are not interested in "walking" homes for sale in Raleigh I have other ideas.

Let’s first start with the most obvious means of being active within your neighborhood.  Get out and walk ! The pollen has not been that bad this spring and with the weather getting warmer, get out and feel the sun’s rays beating down on your face.  The birds are singing and lately it has been gorgeous outside.  If you live in a subdivision what you’ve likely noticed is that people are out and about.  Others are having the same idea.  In these times of social distancing, no one has said that we have to be anti-social.  What I’ve noticed is that people are genuinely happy and greet you with a friendly wave and a hello (from 6 feet apart of course).  But more so than even I’m noticing that people are looking to make connections with others even if it’s just a passing “Hello and Have a Nice Day”.  If you have a dog/s get out and walk them too … they too enjoy this time with you.

Now if you’ve like my wife and daughters … get out and go for a run.  My wife calls it her “pavement therapy”.  She typically runs 5-6 miles per day.  Our girls love getting out and going for a good run as well (when dad doesn’t have them doing soccer drills of course).  Riding your bike either by yourself or with your family is another wonderful way to get outside and just be active and enjoy nature and each other’s company.

In Today's Digital World

Of course in today’s digital age a person can find just about anything on the internet.  Youtube is a fantastic way to locate at-home workouts for yourself and your family.  Many of them do not require any equipment.  If you are lucky enough to have a home-gym or access to some workout equipment at home then the options are endless.

Tabata?  Gesundheit??

For me … my go to cardio workout is called Tabata. Tabata falls within a grouping of exercise called HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training).  There are many different variations of Tabata and always ways to mix up your routine but I tend to stick to the same one 2-3 times per week.  Tabata simply requires about 6-8 feet of space (if that).  You can use no weights up to 10 lbs dumbbells.  Tabata is a timed activity.  The particular Tabata that I perform consists of 8 functional exercises.  These 8 exercises comprise one round.  The total workout consists of 3-5 rounds depending on your fitness level.  Each of the 8 exercises is done for 20 seconds of intense activity with a 10 second rest between each exercise. It looks like this 20-10-20-10-20-10-20-10-20-10-20-10-20-10-20 (total time per round = 3 minutes 50 seconds).

Rest 1-2 minutes between each round. For the purposes of this blog … I won’t specifically state which exercise I perform however please see the link below.  There are many different types of Tabata for many different levels of fitness and age groups.  If you choose to perform this type of exercise, start slow and be certain you are well hydrated. In some cases you may need to also consult your physician if never exercised at this level of intensity.

Regardless of what type of exercise or activity that you decide to perform during these quarantined times please stay active and keep your heart healthy.  It’s great for your mind, body and soul !!!  Stay safe everyone !!!  God Bless
