Heritage Theater, performing shows for their 13th year, puts on a spectacular showing of “Matilda the Musical”! The story of “Matilda” originated as a novel, and since has been translated into a film, a musical movie, and a musical show. The show was first performed at the end of 2010, but since has been performed in a wide variety of places, including the high school stage.

Heritage Theater has performed a wide variety of shows in the past years, ranging from classic Disney shows such as “Beauty and The Beast” to Broadway favorites including “Mean Girls”. “Matilda” may not be as recognized as some of the performances in the past, but it does not disappoint. The show engages the audience through the large-scale dance numbers, funny acting & dialog, and beautiful singing from the lead characters.

As Heritage Theater describes, “Packed with high-energy dance numbers, catchy songs, and an unforgettable star turn for a young actress, Matilda is a joyous girl power romp. Children and adults alike will be thrilled by the story of the special little girl with an extraordinary imagination.” The story is unique, and intricate, and will keep the audience engaged. Going to the show is not only a great opportunity to have fun with family and friends, but it is also a great way to support local arts programs in the community.

Going to the show is a great way to mix up your agenda and watch something new! The performance is entertaining for all people and families. The humor, singing, and dancing will have people of all ages walking out in awe. Additionally, the cast is very engaging throughout the entire experience. After the show ends, the cast comes out in their costumes and in character to sign autographs, take pictures, and interact with everyone.

The reputation of Heritage Theater allows the program to continue to grow and put more shows on stage. This school year, the program plans to do 3 shows, as opposed to most schools doing only 2. Doing 3 shows in a school year means that there is a very compacted timeline to put together and stage the shows. Heritage Theater often enjoys taking on the challenge of putting 3 shows on the stage in a school year. Even though they may not have as much time as other schools in the area to put together their shows, the program is still able to find success selling tickets, along with getting nominated to win awards in the Triangle Rising Stars theater competition.

Heritage Theater is recognized year after year for their difficult choreography, detailed set, and unique lighting. At DPAC’s Triangle Rising Stars ceremony, Heritage Theater has won several awards, including their most recent award for their performance of Mean Girls, which took home the award for Best Musical in the 2022-2023 school year. In addition to the awards that the program has won, several of Heritage Theater’s performers get nominated every year to compete for the title of best actor or actress in the triangle. In recent years, two actresses won the competition for best actress and were able to further their competition at the Jimmy Awards, making their Broadway debut.

The school across town, Wake Forest High School, is bringing to their stage a performance of “Mamma Mia!” Opening in early December, the popular story will be another great way to mix up your agenda and show support in the community. Watching various high schools perform musicals is a great way to open your eyes to the massive pool of youth talent in the Triangle area.

Many local residents got a chance to see the show on opening weekend, but if you missed out, do not worry. Heritage Theater is continuing to perform “Matilda the Musical” for a second weekend that includes a 7pm showing on Thursday and Friday, in addition to the 2 performances on Saturday and Sunday at 2pm and 7pm on both days.
