What Do I Do With My Time?

We find ourselves in unchartered territory and everyone is trying to make the best of the situation.  If lucky, you are able to work from home and not miss a beat.  Kids are home from school and we are all trying to just keep our sanity and stay busy.  There is a lot of uncertainty in when we possibly will get back to normal.  That all being said, we are going into the spring season of the year and regardless of what is happening in the world, our homes need to tender love and care given to them this time of year.  We are coming out of winter, the days are getting warmer, the sun is out longer and we need to make sure we take some time around the house to do some jobs that need to be done.  Here are a few of the things that I try to do this time of year to help assure my family of no issues in the spring/summer…….

Treat for Insects

This is the time of year that the bugs start to come out of hiding.  Gnats and mosquitos start to show themselves, ants begin to start making mounds and become very active and all the other creepy crawlies start showing up on the deck or in the garage possibly.   Take some time to spray around the house a general insect treatment or apply a granular treatment around the foundation of your home to help protect intrusion.  I also like to spray around the inside base of my garage.  I live on a crawlspace foundation and I started about 5 years ago setting off a small fogger can in the crawlspace this time of year to help treat the crawlspace for bugs.  It typically lasts for about 3 months so another application early summer usually prevents the ants from coming inside all season long.

Change your Filters

I have a private well that supplies my water and I have an inline canister filter on the supply line to help filter out particles that may be pulled up by the well pump.  My filter is located in my crawlspace so I have put it on a schedule so that every time I am in the crawlspace for an insect treatment, I also change out my water filter. These filters generally are good for 90-120 days.  Now is also a great time to think about changing out your air filters for your HVAC units.  Depending on the type of filter you use, it can be recommended to change every month to every 3 months.  Regardless if it needs to be changed or not, best to at least put your eyes on it to see.  I know we are opening our windows in the morning to let some cool fresh air in and with that we are also probably letting pollen come right in with it.  Don’t want the HVAC system to get clogged up with pollen that may have entered the home so be sure to keep an eye on that.

Clean out the Garage/Storage Building

I actually recruited my kids this weekend to help me clean out my garage.  It is amazing the amount of dirt that can accumulate there from year to year.  It is also a great time to pull everything out and evaluate what things you really need and don’t need that you may be able to get rid of.  The garage is a tremendous hiding place for bugs and rodents so cleaning it out on a regular annual basis can help keep that pesky population under control.
