Pickleball in the Triangle
The game of Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in America. This is no different here in the great Raleigh/Durham area. Triangle residents are finding out about the sport every day and the demand for facilities to play this fast growing sport is high.
The game started out as an activity mostly geared towards senior adults but has taken a leap and turn to attract folks of all ages. The game of pickleball is a slower paced game that requires not as much movement as the standard game of tennis, but more activity than ping-pong. The style of the game, along with the sociability of the game when playing (especially doubles), has really allowed the sport of Pickleball to greatly expand its reach.
Pickleball is played on a court similar to a tennis court, but about half the size. You play with a solid paddle like you do in table tennis, but it is closer to the size paddle you would find on the racquetball court. The ball reminds you of a wiffle ball (a plastic ball about the size of a softball that has been perforated with approximately 40 holes). The size of the court (20’ wide by 44’ long) is divided in the middle by a 3’ high net. The object of the game is to be first to 11 points and win by 2 points. Unlike other net sports, in Pickleball, you only score a point if you were the player who served.
One player starts by serving the ball underhanded and below the waist from the baseline on their side of the court, diagonally across towards their opponent. The ball may hit the ground one time on the side of the court before it has to be returned to the opponent's side. Play resumes back and forth until the ball goes out of bounds, a player commits a fault, the net is touched by a player or paddle, or the ball is not returned within regulation. (Pickleball Basic Rules)
The size of the Pickleball court and the use of the perforated ball allows for the game to be played not only outside on hard surfaces like a tennis court, but also inside facilities like gymnasiums. There are several neighborhoods in the Triangle that now even offer pickleball courts as part of the amenities of the neighborhood. Lots of municipalities around Wake County have Pickleball courts available for use:
Cary (Bond Park, Herbert Young Community Center, Cary Tennis Park, Carpenter Park, White Oak Park)
Apex (Apex Nature Park, Kelly Road Park, Middle Creek School Park)
Holly Springs (Ting Park)
Fuquay Varina (Fuquay Varina Community Center, Clubworx)
Wake Forest (Flaherty Park)
Raleigh (Method Road Courts, Optimist Park, Lake Lynn Community Center, North Hills Park, Brier Creek Community Center,...)
