Tax Rates in the Triangle Area
Triangle Area Tax Rates
I wrote a blog a few years back on the greater Raleigh housing market and the tax rates for real estate in the area. Now that the 2019 “tax season” is over, I thought it would be good to revisit the area tax rate topic and update everyone on just how good we have it in the area when it comes to the taxes we pay on our homes.
Over the years, I have worked with many clients moving to the area from out of state. A lot of those buyers seem to be relocating from the New England area of the US. Most often, if not coming down for a job relocation, they are retirees. Recently I worked with a couple moving from New Jersey. They are retirees on a fixed income of Social Security and a pension. When considering where to relocate and retire to, they considered the Raleigh area for its cost of living, medical care, proximity to the mountains and beaches but also because of the tremendous savings they would have in their property taxes. In their home in New Jersey, they were paying over $12,000 a year in property tax. Here in the Triangle, their annual tax bill on their brand new $325,000 home was going to be less than $4,000 annually. That puts over $8,000 additional dollars in their wallet every year……….not a bad reason to move.
Here are the latest local area tax rates:
Wake County - .654
(This rate is a constant across the county regardless if you live in city limits or not)
For Example, for every $100,000 of value you have in a home, you will pay $654 in taxes.
A $200,000 assessed home in the county will have a tax bill of $1308 annually.
Additionally, if you live in the town limits of towns in Wake County, then you have an additional tax added to your bill for the town services that you receive (water/sewer, fire, police, waste management, etc.)
Apex - .415
Cary - .35
Fuquay Varina - .4325
Holly Springs - .4325
Raleigh - .4382
Wake Forest - .52
**these rates do not include school tax or fire district tax rates**
