What's Your Big Game Tradition?
It’s time for the Super Bowl! Whether your team is in it or not most people will be tuning in. The Super Bowl reaches about 96,000,000 viewers. I know Raleigh and Wake Forest homeowners will definitely make up some of that. That’s a lot of viewers and with that comes a lot of traditions. What’s yours?
Do you watch it at home with just family or with friends and family? Do you like to enjoy the game with people as long as you are not the host? Do you have that friend who has to have the Super Bowl party every year, year after year? Is there a favorite bar or restaurant you go to that has giveaways and excitement? The Super Bowl is such a spectacle you must tune in, no matter how you watch it. Especially with the half time shows; you never know what is going to happen.
My wife and I always use to host a party and had as many people over as possible. Now with 3 kids, not so much. There is already enough going on. I like to actually hear the game now and listen to the commercials…yes, I am getting older. The parties we use to have in NYC weren’t legendary but a lot of fun. We had massive guacamole bowls, 3 bean dips that would stay with you a few days, hot dogs, burgers, wings, and subs. All the chips you could imagine and enough beer to rival your local convenience store. Plus, we had decorations everywhere. There was a football field tablecloth, Riddle sport helmets all over, football shaped bowls, and football themed napkins.
Since those days are over, we have settled into a simpler routine. I watch for the pregame and the game itself. Also, I have to watch the commercials. After having the opportunity to do commercials in NYC as an actor I had always hoped one of mine would have made the Super Bowl. How fun would that have been? Standing with your peers and saying yep, that was me. I made the Super Bowl! One of the commercials I did got close to being chosen by the client and one aired not too long after but I never actually made the big dance. My wife enjoys the commercials as well but the halftime show is the highlight for her. If it is Brady playing she definitely tunes into the action more!
What are some of your traditions? Do you recreate the stadium out of sandwich meat? Do you have crudités the size of your table shaped like a field goal? Do you go to Party City and buy everything football in the store? Will you be wearing football jerseys even if your team is not in it? I know I will have my Panthers Jersey on! Does your celebration spill over into the back yard with endless corn hole competitions? Do you justify buying a bigger and better TV ever year, well just because?
Whatever your traditions are I think we can all agree this game isn’t just a game, it’s an event. It brings family and friends together no matter who is playing. I really feel the best part of the event is that there really is a little something for everyone. Enjoy and stay safe!
